Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:
This Ubatuba Eco-friendly resort is located in the middle of a natural preservation area that is sanctuary to native birds, sylvan animals and mangrove species. The hotel was built using reforestation wood, bamboo and glass. An environmental education project educates employees and guests, especially children, explaining how important it is to preserve our ecosystem and how they can have an impact by following some very simple daily conservation rules - turning off the tap while brushing teeth, diminishing shower time, reusing water for gardens, using economical lights and sensors in public areas, separating their garbage and trying to reuse all the things that are possible. The hotel is also engaged in beach and river clean up efforts.
Energy-saving lights and light sensors are used.. Water for showers is heated with a combination of solar power and gas heaters. All the taps have timers and rain water is collected for garden use. Kitchen oil is recycled for soap or donated to make biocombustibles.
The resort is totally engaged in preserving the Itamambuca river and beach, helping the community to preserve and maintain this beautiful area pollution free. Efforts supported include: paying a private forest policeman to protect the natural reserve, donating materials towards proper sewage treatment for the alms house, donating building materials for the construction of CERE ( Educational and recreational center of Itamambuca) that offers free courses to the residents and provides a place where children can play. The hotel also donated materials to help rebuild the public surf school and also surf boards. The hotel is always focused on community sustainability and promotes social projects.
The hotel staff receives English and Spanish classes for free.
This Ubatuba resort also hires from the local community, providing new-skills training and an opportunity for self-improvement. The owners support the local school and community association as well. The hotel restaurant is committed to using only fresh fish bought from the local fishermen and natural fruits from the region to support small farmers.
